Thank You for Your Prayers and Support

It has been some time since I have written an article on lifeteen.com, so first let me apologize for being away. Some of you may have heard that on July 3rd my wife Kristen was in a bad accident. She was struck by a car while she was jogging and sustained two broken shoulders and [...]

Finding a Spiritual Director (and what to expect)

I remember one day in seminary hearing the very direct words of one of the faculty– “a priest without a spiritual director is a menace.” It was a bold statement, but the emphasis on spiritual direction was important. The history of the Church has always held the position of spiritual director as vital to the life of any clergy or religious. Today that still holds true, but many lay men and women, especially those in a life of ministry, also find a spiritual director to be a huge benefit.

5 Must-Have Books for Catholic Youth Leaders

I am an avid reader. I love to begin books. No, that is not a misprint. While I love beginning books, I rarely finish them. A cursory glance at my bookshelf would reveal hundreds upon hundreds of books, spine bent and underlined – many of which contain later chapters still in unread, pristine condition. I [...]

Covecrest Interns Reach Out to Local Parishes

Can you do this? Life Teen interns leading youth group at a local parish Covecrest is loaded with Life Teen interns who’ve committed a year of their lives to formation, prayer, and training. Tapping into Teamwork: Finding help in your Diocese

When God called me out of my secure and comfortable world of disorders, shots fired calls, and drug busts, and into the really dangerous, frightening, and uncertain landscape of Diocesan youth ministry, (well OK, maybe just a little dangerous), at first I felt a bit… well, lonely. Don’t get me wrong, I never once doubted [...]

Starbucks Spirituality: Breaking the Addiction to the Spiritual Rush

Gotta have that rush! Living in Arizona, the only way you know the season has changed is when you step foot in a Starbucks. All of a sudden new selections of coffees and pastries like pumpkin spice lattes and pumpkin loafs are tempting you from behind the glass case. They are even trying to take [...]

Advice from a Priest: Finding Your Place on the Parish Staff

Let me set the scene: It’s the parish staff meeting. Its always bright and early… 9am, even if you had Bible study until 9pm last night. Everyone grabs coffee and the conversation begins with the process of going around the table talking about “calendar items”. Then, the topics go to things like who didn’t put the chairs away last night or to the roof leaking again. If it’s a good week, there aren’t any references to your youth being loud or leaving trash around. The meeting goes longer than expected, and at the end, you wonder if anyone on the staff has any idea at all what you do as a youth minister.

Pro-Life is Proactive: 9 Tips for Pro-Life Ministry

We’ve all been there before – it’s early on Saturday morning, the cold air is numbing your hands as they hold the string of your Rosary. The city is still asleep, but you move into place with your fellow warriors and wait for the reason you’re awake at 6AM – babies. As the first young [...]

Catholic filmmakers of ‘Bella’ visit Life Teen

It’s not often that a film leaves you wanting to stand up and cheer. It’s even less often that a film leaves you speechless. It is (unfortunately) almost never that a film accentuates the beauty and sanctity of human life. All that is about to change. I’m not exaggerating when I say that the new [...]
