Surviving the Storm: 6 Tips to Help you through Hurricane Irene

I’m writing this post Friday morning before Hurricane Irene reaches the United States because who knows what Monday morning will bring. Will there be power? Will there be cell phone coverage? Will there be internet connectivity? Anyway, it occurs to me that the same steps involved in emergency preparedness are good steps to also be [...]

Filled with Joy: Day 2 from the 2011 Life Teen and Edge Training Convention

Some people, when they go to light a big bonfire, pile the logs perfectly in a square. However, some are a fan of the triangular log configuration. Then there’s always the person who just throws all the logs in the pit and has to rearrange them every 10 minutes. Any way you do it, there’s [...]

5 Reasons to Take Your Teens to See “Soul Surfer”

During my years as a Youth Minister, I was often flooded with emails, phone calls, and mailings trying to get me to take my teens to the latest Christian movie. Many of these movies had nice stories but lacked strong acting, direction, production, and more, which made it difficult for me to want to take my teens. That’s why I was pleasantly surprised when I recently had the opportunity to get a special screening of the movie Soul Surfer based on the true story of Bethany Hamilton, a 13-year-old girl who survived a shark attack while surfing. I was familiar with the basics of the story, but did not realize the role that Christianity plays in this young lady’s life.

Feeling Isolated in Your Ministry? How to Find Encouragement

I remember my first Life Teen Training Convention 6 years ago. I was fresh into a youth ministry career and was asked to do Life Teen for the first time at our small parish of 250 members.  During my first convention, Randy Raus had said, “Be prepared for when you do things for Christ, Satan [...]

God’s Plan Not Ours

“What is God doing and how can I be a part of it?” One of my friends posted this question sometime ago.   I find myself thinking about it often in terms of my own life, but I also need to think about it as it relates to youth ministry.  It’s easy to make our plans [...]

Help! I Want to Be a Youth Minister AND Support a Family

I’ve run across a lot of Youth Ministers in my time. Whether it be at conferences, meetings, or some other encounter there is always one underlying theme: we don’t make a lot of money. Sometimes we joke about it. Sometimes we say it’s no big deal because we’re doing the Lord’s work (which is a [...]

Announcing Life Teen’s 2011 Theme: “Veni Sancte Spiritus”

Are your teens and parish “fired up” when the Spirit’s fire falls or do the cradle Catholics in the pews reach for extinguishers out of a desire to remain comfortable? How do you typically celebrate the movement of the Holy Spirit in your daily life?

It Goes with the Territory

When I was growing up almost every time I would whine and complain about something, my dad would simply say – “It goes with the territory” – meaning that more than likely what I was complaining about was something that went along with either the choices I had made or that it was part of being the age I was and wishing I was more grown up. The reality for us in Catholic youth ministry is that there are a lot of potentially unpleasant things we face simply because it goes with the territory. The key is not focusing on all the negatives we face but in realizing the positives that go with the territory.

The Theology of Randomness: how useless knowledge can be useful in ministry

I love useless knowledge. I could read random bits of trivia all day. One of the reasons that I love Sacred Scripture so much is because there are so many random, seemingly unimportant details found in its pages. They fascinate me. Nothing is unnecessary, however. Every iota of Scripture was inspired and breathed by the [...]

The Drag and Gary Show: “Lent”

Our friends Drag and Gary meet up with Matt Maher, our favorite Canadian Catholic singer/songwriter, to talk about Lent. We learn about God’s mercy, using our inside voices, and cheese pizza.
