Goal of this Life Night

The goal of this night is to introduce Life Teen’s annual theme to the teens of the parish. In this Life Night, the teens will gain a deeper understanding of the role of the Holy Spirit, how we are to pray to and with the Spirit of God, and how He works within our lives.

About this night

This Life Night introduces Life Teen’s annual theme for 2011: Veni Sancte Spiritus. This is the fifth year Life Teen has chosen an annual theme; each theme helps guide and direct the content of our events and resources throughout the year. It is our hope that these themes can also provide a framework for parish youth ministry programs as well. This year is all about the Holy Spirit. At Pentecost, God freely gave us His Spirit, and it is given to each person at Baptism. The Catechism describes the Holy Spirit as “the interior Master of Christian prayer” (CCC 2672). This Life Night will begin with icebreaker games involving Pig Latin. The talk will explain the Latin theme and what it means to call on the Holy Spirit for wisdom, guidance and courage. The Break for the night is a time of personal reflection and prayer. The Life Night ends with praying the simple, yet powerful prayer, “Come Holy Spirit,” and inviting the Holy Spirit to move in the lives of the teens.

This is our third annual Global Edge Night and Service Project. This year we are focusing on the corporal work of mercy of “giving drink to the thirsty.” This Edge Night will give the youth an awareness of the lack of clean water to millions of people in the world. Through a “change drive,” the global Life Teen and Edge community will raise money to build and maintain four water wells in Africa. Finally, this Edge Night will reveal Christ as “living water” for all our needs.

Edge Night at a Glance

In September of 2008, Life Teen hosted the first global Life Night and Edge Night and as one family, we donated over 300,000 pounds of clothing to charity. In September 2009, we moved from clothing to food and we were able to donate over 200,000 food items to local food pantries and soup kitchens. This year we are at it again. This time we are joining together to “give drink to the thirsty” (another corporal work of mercy). We are asking all our Life Teen and Edge parishes to do the same Edge Night on the same night – September 27, 2010 (or as close to that date as possible). This time we are collecting change (and bills) to bring clean drinking water to villages in Africa.

Goal for this Life Night

This is our third annual Global Life Night and service project. This year we are focusing on the corporal work of mercy of “giving drink to the thirsty.” This Life Night will give teens an awareness of the lack of clean water to millions of people in the world. Through a “change drive,” the global Life Teen community will raise money to build and maintain four water wells in Africa. Finally, this Life Night will reveal Christ as “living water” for all our needs.

About this night

In September 2008, Life Teen hosted the first global Life Night. As one family we donated more than 450,000 pounds of clothing to charity. In September 2009, we moved from clothing to food and were able to donate more than 200,000 food items to local food pantries and soup kitchens. This year we are at it again. This time we are joining together to “give drink to the thirsty” (another corporal work of mercy). We are asking all our Life Teen parishes to do the same Life Night on the same night – September 26, 2010. This time we are collecting change (and
bills) to help bring clean drinking water to villages in Africa.

This Life Night starts by giving the teens an experience of thirst. Through salty snacks and crazy Saltine games (and no water), the teens will have fun and be thirsty. The Proclaim will highlight the current water crisis in many parts of the world as well as ways that the teens can be a part of the solution. The talk will also tie in our call as Christians to work for justice and live in solidarity with all people. During the Break, the teens will help count all the money collected while discussing in small groups the importance of water, both physically and spiritually. Finally, the Send is a meditation on the conversation between Jesus and the Samaritan woman in John 4 and how Christ is our “living water.”

Saint Joseph, I, your unworthy child, greet you. You are the faithful protector and intercessor of all who love and venerate you. You know that I have special confidence in you and that, after Jesus and Mary, I place all my hope of salvation in you, for you are especially powerful with God and will never abandon your faithful servants. Therefore I humbly invoke you and commend myself, with all who are dear to me and all that belong to me, to your intercession. I beg of you, by your love for Jesus and Mary, not to abandon me during life and to assist me at the hour of my death.

Glorious Saint Joseph, spouse of the Immaculate Virgin, obtain for me a pure, humble, charitable mind, and perfect resignation to the divine Will. Be my guide, my father, and my model through life that I may merit to die as you did in the arms of Jesus and Mary. Loving Saint Joseph, faithful follower of Jesus Christ, I raise my heart to you to implore your powerful intercession in obtaining from the Divine Heart of Jesus all the graces necessary for my spiritual and temporal welfare, particularly the grace of a happy death, and the special grace I now implore:

(Mention your request).

Guardian of the Word Incarnate, I feel confident that your prayers in my behalf will be graciously heard before the throne of God. Amen.

In 1935, St. Maria Faustina, an uneducated Polish nun, received a vision of an angel sent by God to chastise an evil city. She began to pray for mercy, but her prayers were powerless. Suddenly she felt the power of Jesus’ grace within her. At the same time she found herself pleading with God for mercy with these words:

Eternal Father, I offer You the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your dearly beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world; for the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us. (Diary, 475)

Prayed on ordinary rosary beads, The Chaplet of The Divine Mercy is an intercessory prayer that invokes the mercy of God poured out for us on the cross. In prayer, Jesus told St. Faustina: “By this Novena, [of Chaplets] I will giant every possible grace to souls” (796).
