Death, Where is Your Victory?

Paschal Mystery

Edge Night Outline

Goal of this Night

The goal of this Edge Night is to help the youth enter into and experience the Paschal Mystery. The youth will understand the necessity of Christ’s suffering and death and the glory of His Resurrection and Ascension.

About this night

This Edge Night is at the heart of the semester on the Creed because the Paschal Mystery is at the heart of our faith. The purpose of the night is not merely to learn about the Paschal Mystery, but to experience it. The Paschal Mystery is the Passion, death, Resurrection and Ascension of Jesus Christ. It is through Christ’s death and Resurrection that we can expect ourselves to resurrect on the last day when He returns in glory. Also, an understanding of the Paschal Mystery helps us learn how to pick up our own cross with hope that every suffering, when endured with Christ, leads to a resurrection. This Edge Night provides a lot of potential for adaptation.

The Edge Night begins with a video that introduces the theme of the Paschal Mystery. As the night continues, the youth will enter into the suffering of Christ through the Stations of the Cross. The night ends with a celebration of Christ’s Resurrection. There is potential for a Living Stations presentation or praise and worship in this Edge Night as well.

Environment

The environment should be pretty straightforward. Have a large/life-size cross prominently displayed at the front of the room. Decorate the area around the cross with candles, flowers or some sort of memorial setting. On the other side of the room create an empty tomb. You can do this with a tent or some cardboard boxes. Use a white cloth for the burial cloth of Jesus and leave it in the empty tomb.

The secondary environment for the room will be for the Resurrection party at the end of the night. Once the youth go to small group, prepare the room for the party with the help of additional parents or Core Members for the night. If you do not have space for the Stations of the Cross and the party, find balloons or streamers that can be thrown to create a celebratory atmosphere.
