Teaching Office in the Church: the Magisterium

Life Night Outline

Goal of this Night

The goal of this night is to help the teens understand that obedience to the Magisterium can bring true freedom. Teens will be able to recognize that the Magisterium is made up of the pope and bishops who interpret what has been revealed as Truth in sacred Scripture and sacred Tradition.

About this night

This Life Night will show the beauty and freedom that is offered in living an obedient Christian life. This night can be very hard for some teens who live in a world that tells them to live by the authority of feeling. Prepare for this night by praying that the hearts of the teens will be open to seeing the beauty that is within the Magisterium of Holy Mother Church. The Life Night will show the teens that the authority of the Magisterium comes from Jesus Christ and that He has protected it for over 2,000 years from the trends of societies and cultures.

The night begins with a skit that demonstrates the need for authority within the Church. The break will give teens an opportunity to look at different issues that have arisen in current events when the Magisterium declares a revealed Truth. The teens will end the night by praying for obedience through the Litany of Humility.

Parental Notice

This week we are taking a look at the Magisterium of the Church. Many people wonder if this a place or a book or just another cool word Catholics made up. The Magisterium is the teaching authority of the Church entrusted to the Apostles and their predecessors, our pope and bishops. In this night, we looked at how the pope and bishops declare what has been revealed by the Holy Spirit so that we may experience true freedom in our lives. As a family, take some time this week to pray for your local bishop(s) and the intentions of the Holy Father, which can be found online. Here a few discussion questions to keep the Life Night going at home:

  1. Is it hard to be obedient to the teachings of the Church?
  2. Do you struggle with being obedient at home? Why or why not?
  3. Can you see the freedom that comes in following the teachings of Christ?
  4. Where can we, as a family, seek answers to the teachings of Jesus that are most hard to follow in our parish?

The environment for tonight should have every die hard football fan totally pumped! Think pigskin when planning everything out. All of the Core Members should be dressed as football players. You can even have some cheerleaders if you plan their attire to be modest. If possible have some of your clergy dressed as coaches, and of course, the youth minister can be a referee. The stage should look like the sideline of a football game with a metal bench, Gatorade coolers and even green turf (if possible). As the teens enter have college football fight songs playing or even the NFL theme song. Have some Core Members walking around offering to paint black lines under the teens’ eyes (aka “Eye Black”). Have fun and be creative with this environment.
