The Incarnation & Hypostatic Union
Life Night Outline
Goal of this Night
This Life Night will help teenagers understand the two natures of Jesus Christ as fully human and fully divine. It will help teenagers understand that Jesus Christ shared in our human experience and, as a result, understands our lives and suffering.
About this night
This Life Night focuses on the Incarnation and hypostatic union of Jesus Christ. It follows a Christmas theme and begins with a challenge to create a new “Life Teen Christmas Carol” between all of the small groups. The teaching challenges teenagers to realize the magnitude of the Incarnation. The Break gives teenagers the opportunity to process the teaching before moving into a time of Lectio Divina during the Send.
This week at Life Night we discussed the Incarnation of Christ and His hypostatic union – the reality that Jesus Christ was both fully human and fully divine. The mystery of the Incarnation is a crucial Truth for our faith; it is the moment that the prophets had foretold and all of creation had been waiting for. It is the historical moment when God visited humanity and became like us in all things except sin. We challenged the teens to contemplate this mystery and make changes in their lives to reflect it. Because Christ took on our humanity, it also means that He understands our human emotions, what it means to suffer, and even what it means to die. Because of this, God intimately knows our condition and the joys and pains we endure in our humanity. This thought is not only comforting, but it demonstrates what an incredible God we serve. This week, take time in your own prayer life to reflect on the birth narratives in the Bible (Matthew 1:18-25 or Luke 2:1-20) and discern where you need to grow in your relationship with Christ. Consider doing this as a family or with your teenage son or daughter sometime this week.
The environment for this night should be set up like a giant Christmas party. Have a Christmas tree with gifts underneath it, Christmas lights hung up around the room, and have the Core Team dress up in Christmas sweaters. Have Christmas carols playing as the teens walk into the room. If you serve food, consider having Christmas cookies out prior to the Life Night or as teens walk in.
