The Death of Christ

Life Night Outline

Goal of this Night

The goal for this Life Night is to help the teens understand what happened when Jesus died. This night will illumine the events of Holy Saturday and Jesus’ decent into hell. Finally, this night will address the issue of death and the promise of eternal life.

About this night

This Life Night takes a closer look at the events of Holy Saturday – the death of Christ and His descent into hell. This night also addresses the teens’ fears and concerns about death, focusing on the hope won for us by Christ. The Life Night starts with a serious skit depicting the apostles on Holy Saturday. The Proclaim begins with a large group discussion and then a teaching on the death of Christ and how that affects our own death and judgment. The Break gives the teens a chance to talk about their own feelings about and experiences of death, and how we are given hope through Christ’s death. Finally, the Send consists of a reflection on Holy Saturday and a time to pray for the souls of those who have gone before us.

Parental Notice

This Life Night focused on the death of Christ and how in His dying He destroyed death. Most of the teens have experienced the death of a loved one. This night looked at how we as Christians are called to have hope even when we grieve. The events of Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday changed everything. Death no longer has the final word. This particular Life Night is an emotionally charged topic. We ask that you take the time to talk to your teen about this Life Night. If possible, share with them how you have dealt with death. Take time to pray for family members who have died. Below are a few questions to get the conversation started:

  1. What did you think about the Life Night? What stood out to you?
  2. What do you think of when you think of death? Does it scare you?
  3. How does Jesus bring us hope even when someone dies?

Environment

The environment for this night should be stark and plain. Have nothing on the walls, nothing going on as the teens enter the room and nothing at the front of room except the people who are part of the Gather skit (they should be frozen in place). The room should be dark with only a few lights on the people in the skit. The room should also be silent. Have Core Members help get the teens to enter the Life Night in silence.
