What Goes Up …

ASCENSION/PENTECOST

Life Night Outline

Goal of this Night

The goal of this Life Night is to understand the significance of Jesus’ Ascension into heaven and the sending of the Holy Spirit. This Life Night will help the teens understand the power of the Holy Spirit at work in their lives, and their call to discipleship.

About this night

This night on the Ascension and Pentecost will begin with skit that shows a funny conversation between the persons of the Trinity as they plan what will take place on Pentecost. This will lead into the teaching that provides the context in which the Ascension and Pentecost fit into Salvation History. The teaching also highlights the completion of Christ’s mission and the beginning of the Church’s mission, which includes all Christians. The Holy Spirit is an important part of our Christians life, and this Life Night will help us gain a better understanding of His role in our lives. The night will conclude with a Scriptural meditation on the Holy Spirit incorporating the “Come, Holy Spirit” prayer.

Parental Notice

This week we looked at the Scripture accounts of Jesus’ Ascension and the descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. These two events are the completion of Jesus’ earthly life and when the Holy Spirit empowers the disciples to become witnesses. As Christians, we are all empowered by the Holy Spirit and His gifts to continue the mission that Jesus began during His life. A few possible discussion questions:

  1. Why did Jesus have to ascend to heaven?
  2. Why is the feast of Pentecost so important?
  3. What role does the Holy Spirit play in the Church and our lives?

Environment

The environment for this night is the skit environment and should resemble heaven. In the front of the room you will need a table with three chairs. This will be the scene for the skit – the chairs will be designated for the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. On the table have a coffee cup at the Father’s chair, a planner for the Son and an iPhone for the Holy Spirit. To give the illusion of floating in the clouds, tape pillow stuffing on their feet (you can find pillow stuffing in any craft store.) In front of the table have clouds painted on paper or poster board. You should also have pictures of clouds around the room to make it feel like heaven. Around the room you could place pillow stuffing to give the feel of clouds. Around the door of the meeting space, tape a golden yellow “gate” made out of paper. Have one of the Core Members dressed as St. Peter. The other Core Members should be dressed up like angels or their favorite saint.
