Saints Peter and Paul, a small, family-oriented parish with 400+ families is seeking a dynamic, faith-filled, part-time High School Youth Minister. The ideal candidate must be passionate about ministering to youth, and must have excellent relational skills with teenagers. This is a part-time (25-30 hours per week + health and benefits) position, with additional hours permitted for retreats and other approved youth events. The ideal candidate would possess a bachelor’s degree in Theology, Pastoral Ministry, Youth Ministry, Catechetics, or a related field, have excellent relational, communication, and organization skills, and be familiar with the Life Teen program.

The High School Youth Minister would be responsible for coordinating the Parish’s High School Life Teen program, as well as the parish’s High School Junior/Senior Leadership Team (Teen Apostles) and the parish Confirmation program. Additionally, this person will work closely with the Middle School (Edge) Minister in providing continuity of pastoral care to teens.

Good Shepherd Parish, Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, is looking for a full time, energetic and creative Youth Minister to work with our youth, primarily in the EDGE middle school ministry, Confirmation ministry and to restart the LifeTeen Program for High School age. There are about 75+ youth in this age group. The candidate should be familiar with the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program that feeds the Edge, Confirmation and LifeTeen ministries. This position requires a practicing Catholic who has a love for the Lord and a knowledge of Roman Catholic Theology, psychology, education, sociology and other relevant fields to be an effective leader and youth minister. Catechist certification and experience are preferable. The applicant should possess a bachelor’s degree and be an active member of a Catholic Community. The Youth Minister will be expected to be present on Sundays and days of programming and be able to demonstrate a strong love and knowledge of our Catholic faith and the ability to share this with all of our parishioners. The Youth Minister will also work with the Director of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Program, and the Pastor and music ministers on a weekly basis. The Youth Minister will be encouraged to learn the Catechesis Program and if there is time receiving certification and instruct on one of the levels. We feel this will help the Youth Minister to know and grow with the Youth of the Parish.

The Pastoral Associate for Youth Ministries will maintain and enhance a comprehensive youth ministry program that fully engages middle school and high school students in parish life. In addition, this person will work with the Pastoral Associate for Faith Formation to lead the Confirmation preparation process. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: working with the High School CORE team, the middle school CORE team, providing resources to parents for programming in grades 3-5, working with Director of Faith Formation for Confirmation preparation, maintaining a budget and providing fundraising opportunities for annual mission trips, retreats and Steubenville Conferences.

Qualifications – This Person Must:

-Be an active, practicing Catholic

- Have at least a bachelor’s degree in church ministry, theology, religious studies, religious education or equivalent in-field experience

- Have a minimum of two years of church ministry

- Be a mature person with strong Catholic values.

The Coordinator of Youth Ministry is responsible for the development and implementation of a comprehensive model for youth ministry, including the Confirmation Preparation Program. The Coordinator administers parish ministry with high school and middle school students, promotes the faith formation of teens, and recruits, forms, and supports adult and teen leaders. The Coordinator empowers youth for Christian ministry and acts as an advocate and link for teens within the parish and wider community. The Coordinator is an active participant in the lay leadership structure of the parish.

DIRECTOR OF YOUTH FORMATION

The Director of Youth Formation must be faithful to the Magisterium of the Catholic Church and have a sufficient theological or catechetical background, preferably a degree from a reputable Catholic institution. He/She must be comfortable working with young people and sharing the Faith with others. At least 2 years of parish youth ministry is highly desired.

The Director must be mature in his/her spiritual life and a faithful practicing Catholic in good standing with the Church. He/She must practice an authenticity and coherence of life so as to provide a solid witness of the Faith to parish youth and the surrounding community. The Director is well versed in the catechetical documents of the Church, specifically Renewing the Vision, the General Directory for Catechesis, and the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

Acknowledging the position is in a growing parish and developing program, the Director will take part in helping reach the goal and vision of the Youth Formation program by respecting what has already been put in place and remaining consistent with the overall vision of the parish and youth program, while also using unique talents and ideas to help develop further.

Responsibilities
• Develop, oversee, implement and evaluate the development of age-appropriate curriculum for Life Teen (grades 9-12) and Confirmation including organizing retreats, trips, and various activities
• Train, recruit, and support the Core Teams for Life Teen and Confirmation
• Communicate with Teens and Parents on a weekly
• Develop programs and outreach that reaches out to new youth and implement a missionary style of ministry (GDC 185)
• Oversee and help develop along with the Assistant Director, curriculum for the younger grades
• Serve as an advocate and liaison for the youth and the parish providing opportunities for youth to get involved in parish activities and to get parishioners active in youth ministry
• Plan and oversee the Youth Formation budget
• Attend any Diocesan meetings and retreats for youth ministers and parish catechetical leaders
• Attend any parochial meetings as determined by the pastor or by invite to help promote the program
• Weekly submit relevant bulletin announcement for Life Teen and Confirmation and oversee the information submitted for the younger grades
• Manage, monitor, and update regularly all Life Teen and youth media outlets including: Facebook, Twitter, parish site (youth page), and the parish Life Teen website (www.stjohnyouth.com)
• Facilitate weekly Core Team meetings and regular Youth Formation Office meetings
• Develop and maintain relationships with local youth ministry and youth catechesis programs
• Manage and keep up to date all adult volunteer files for Safe Environment, ongoing training and diocesan certification, and Life Teen contracts/covenants and appropriately manage any incident reports
• Participate and remain up to date in the Diocesan Safe Environment class
• Attend ongoing formation whether through Life Teen trainings, personal retreats, or catechetical conferences
• Adhere to all parish and diocesan policies and procedures
• Any other task as requested by the pastor or deemed necessary as the position and program develop

Skills and Qualifications:
• Understand the purpose and goal of the new evangelization
• Must be practicing Catholic in good standing with the Church and a sound spiritual life
• Must be self-motivated, energetic, flexible, able to take on many tasks at once, skilled in dealing appropriately with high school age group and relating with various teen personalities, and able to lead various groups of people effectively
• Degree in Catechetics/Youth Ministry/Theology or equivalent from reputable Catholic institution with 2+ years of experience (all other background with high school degree must have at least 6+ years to be considered)
• Certification in youth ministry a plus
• Ability to develop a program that is focused on giving teens the skills to evangelize to peers
• Computer knowledge of Microsoft Office necessary, ability to work with programs in Adobe a plus
• Demonstrate excellent oral/written communication and interpersonal skills
• Ability to work effectively with young children, teens, adults, parents, and volunteers
• Demonstrate excellent organizational skills
• Must have good judgment and maturity in order to lead the entire program
• Must be able to work independently, with minimal supervision and frequent interruptions
• Must be available to work nights and weekends, as required
• Present to St. John the Baptist Catholic parish by attending Masses, events, and various community activities
