Within seven days of each other, Life Teen is privileged to host three Steubenville Youth Conferences. Over six thousand teens attend these events every year, and the impact is consistently incredible. I wish you could see what I get to see! The happy faces, the tired, but overjoyed youth ministers, the transformation . . . and the list could continue. It may seem far away, but we are in the active planning phase for all three of these teen events.
Autumn is finally here! The leaves are beginning to change, a new chill is in the air, and college football is reigning supreme. Most importantly, your Life Teen and Edge programs are in full swing. It was a Saturday night at a Steubenville Youth Conference. The crowds of teenagers had entered the convention center and Adoration had just started. And then I hear it. It was audible. Not loud, but definitely noticeable. A teen was saying, while Eucharistic Adoration was going on, “I don’t believe in you.” Even while all of his friends around him were experiencing Jesus in a profound way, this teen could not take that leap of faith yet. And he wanted everyone to know it. But that quickly changed.
The chances are you will be taking a group of teens to an event, retreat or conference in the near future. Events and retreats are a beautiful part of our ministry to youth. These events may take place in different areas of the country and may vary from one day youth rallies to weeklong conferences. Regardless of the location, length or number of youth, the one constant is the need to ensure a safe environment for everyone involved. Here is a list to help you evaluate if the youth events you are planning and attending are truly safe.
As Core Teams and youth ministers we know that going to our teens’ events can make a big impact. After a number of years in youth ministry, I think I have now been to nearly every sporting event the public school system has to offer. I have also seen some amazing plays, moving orchestra concerts and “interesting” talent shows. I keep going because I know the impact that showing up can have in relational ministry.
