With options dwindling, there’s always one choice that works 60% of the time every time: movies. During my years as a Youth Minister, I was often flooded with emails, phone calls, and mailings trying to get me to take my teens to the latest Christian movie. Many of these movies had nice stories but lacked strong acting, direction, production, and more, which made it difficult for me to want to take my teens. That’s why I was pleasantly surprised when I recently had the opportunity to get a special screening of the movie Soul Surfer based on the true story of Bethany Hamilton, a 13-year-old girl who survived a shark attack while surfing. I was familiar with the basics of the story, but did not realize the role that Christianity plays in this young lady’s life.
