The Young Church Needs More Sin… (So to Speak)

2011-04_ChurchNeedsMoreSin

Teens – and adults – are being swallowed up and spit out by a secular humanist, morally relativist culture. People have forgotten a fundamental truth about sin: namely, that God did not give Adam and Eve the right to decide what was good and evil (subjective); in His mercy, He gave them the right to choose between good and evil (objective).

Finishing Lent Strong – How to “Crush It” All Holy Week Long!

I noticed that my two middle school aged sons had transformed the palm leaves handed to them when entering Mass into “Palm Crosses.” I asked why they always make crosses out of the palms on Palm Sunday? The reply was one that got me thinking about Holy Week. They looked at me and said, “Dad, we take the crosses home and put them up on our bedroom wall so we can remember Jesus every day.” Ah, the simplicity of the answer reminded me of what Holy Week is supposed to be about–contemplating Jesus and His Passion!

Temptation: The Old Testament – Fall of Man / Original Sin

Keywords: | | | | |

The goal of this Edge Night is that the youth will understand that sin entered the world because of the disobedience of Adam and Eve, but from the very beginning God had a plan of salvation to restore our relationship. “Why do bad things happen to good people?” The truth is, because of Original Sin, sin and death have entered the world. As we read in Genesis 1 & 2, God created us to be in perfect union with Him. God gave Adam and Eve everything in the Garden of Eden, but told them not to partake of “the tree of knowledge of good and evil.” God is omniscient and He alone can know what is good and evil. When Adam and Eve ate from the tree, it was a sign of disobedience and desire to decide what would be good or bad, thus turning away from God.

Tonight’s session will help the middle school youth explore Genesis 3 through the temptations they struggle with. As the middle school youth enter, they will be tempted to partake of the goodies around the room. Through the Proclaim and small group activities, they will discover that God knows what is best for them and He has a plan for each one of them.
